Why stay away from the Book of Enoch? It is common for Evangelicals to warn against reading Enoch and other literature of the second temple period simply because it's not in the Bible. But what is the Book of Enoch (aka 1 Enoch)? 1 Enoch is a Jewish book dating to 200-300 years before Christ, which elaborates on the story of Noah from Genesis 6 and following. Many Evangelical Christians don't realize that 1 Enoch also influenced many authors of the New Testament, especially Jude, Peter, and John. Who was Enoch in the bible? He was a biblical character, predating Noah by a couple of generations, who lived a righteous life and was taken up by God without dying. In 1 Enoch, he engages the spiritual world of the flood narratives, participates in the judgment of fallen angels, and recounts the apocalypse at the end of days.

The Watchers and the Holy Ones is a narrative reading of 1 Enoch: The Book of the Watchers. It will serve as a primer for Evangelical Christians who want to engage the literature for the first time and see how 1 Enoch illuminates the New Testament theology of judgment and the afterlife.

Great read!

Broken down very well to understand and correlate information between the Bible and the book of Enoch. I have learned a lot and see the importance and references of Enoch’s work within the Bible. I plan to purchase another copy for my brother in law who has always asked the question “why isn’t Enoch part of the Bible”. this book does a great job not only answering that question, but a lot of reasons why we should read Enoch as Christians to help answer such questions as well! Highly recommend it!

This book is an intriguing read!

I initially purchased this book out of curiosity. I was aware of the book of Enoch and the other “lost” books of the Bible, but never had read any. The title piqued my interest and the book did not disappoint. For anyone who has read Genesis and has wondered about the fallen angels, the nephilim, and how in the world did mankind become so sinful that God decided to wipe them from the face of the earth (as I did), this book adds an insight to the book of Genesis that, for me, helped to give a sense of clarity to this period in the Old Testament timeline. It is beautiful to read Enoch’s words, and I found the entreaties of the fallen almost heartbreaking as they realize their fate. Anthony is an excellent scholar of this material and provided skilled “tie in’s” in his evangelical readings. I could say more this book - there is so much I found to be thought provoking in it. I highly recommend you buy it and revisit the book of Genesis through these pages. Its’s a fairly quick read, but one I think I will be returning to - it certainly will wake up any sleepy brain cells !
